Pa. Dept. of Environmental Protection Website Offers Information on Marcellus Shale Gas Drilling Issues

The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection offers an informative website with comprehensive weblinks that address many of the issues brought about by the Marcellus Shale natural gas drilling boom. A wide array of problems regarding drilling wastewater have been reported from both private homeowners (contaminated wells, dishwashers and washing machines malfunctioning from sediment in water, spots on dishes) and business owners (salty sediment in water corroding machinery). In October, the DEP began an investigation as to whether drilling wastewater contributed to the death of 10,000 fish within a 30 plus mile segment of Dunkard Creek, which winds through West Virginia and feeds into the Monongahela River.
With the continued boom in gas well drilling operations, these issues are sure to remain at the forefront.
