Anyone that drives in Northeastern Pennsylvania knows that the roads in this area are generally in bad condition. The Scranton Times reported today that a study issued by the research group TRIP reveals that the condition of Northeastern Pennsylvania’s roads and bridges costs each Scranton/Wilkes-Barre area motorist an average of $1,320 annually. That total is broken down as $539 per driver for damage from road conditions, $437 for lost time and fuel from traffic congestion, and $344 from auto accidents. The study further revealed that fatality rates on rural roads are nearly 2.5 times higher than other roads and estimated that road features contribute to one-third of deaths. Safety hazards associated with rural roads include narrow lanes, unpaved shoulders, lack of rumble strips and higher speed limits than more populated areas. The study further revealed that Pennsylvania has the greatest share of structurally deficient bridges in the country. The Pennsylvania legislature is currently examining several alternatives to raise revenue to invest in improvements to the Commonwealth’s transportation system of road and bridges. Hopefully, the funding will be approved and the much needed improvements will begin soon. In the interim, be careful and exercise extreme caution whenever driving or occupying a motor vehicle on Pennsylvania’s roadways.
