The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDot) had plans to widen Interstate 81 in Lackawanna and Luzerne Counties due to increased traffic. However, the Scranton Times recently reported that PennDot has indefinitely postponed construction on the proposed I-81 widening project for two reasons. Initially, the economic growth of the area has not kept pace with (and correspondingly traffic growth has not met) the project estimates that had determined the improvements were necessary. Additionally, like most government agencies these days, PennDot has an abundance of projects that need to be completed but there is a shortage of money available to fund all of them. Recent studies have identified a plethora of Pennsylvania bridges that are deteriorating and in a state of needing emergency repairs and replacement. Thus, PennDot has been designating bridge construction projects as having priority over other road construction project when it comes to allocating a limited amount of construction funding. The projected I-81 widening construction project in Northeastern Pennsylvania (NEPA) was expected to cost several hundred million dollars and would have lasted several years. The project itself would be a catalyst for spurring economic growth in NEPA with construction jobs and as a incentive for attracting new businesses to expand into the area due to our attractive infrastructure systems. In this regard, let’s hope that PennDot revisits this issue soon and decides to move forward with construction in Lackawanna County and Luzerne County to widen I-81.
